In 1980, Steve Jobs said the Apple computer was like a “bicycle for the human mind.” Today, generative AI can be considered a spaceship for the human mind, taking us to new heights of creativity and innovation. Tuck marketing professor Scott Neslin examines the profitability of digital coupons and finds some nuanced answers. In the corporate world, G-AI can analyze market trends, predict consumer behavior, and even suggest strategic moves. However, the onus remains on the human leader to frame the strategic questions, interpret the AI’s predictions, and make decisions that align with the organization’s values and goals. In the health care sector, G-AI can sift through medical literature and patient data at lightning speed, offering potential diagnoses.
This is typically done using a type of machine learning algorithm known as a generative model. There are many different types of generative models, each of which uses a different approach to generating new data. Some common types of generative models include generative adversarial networks (GANs), variational Yakov Livshits autoencoders (VAEs), and autoregressive models. Jasper.AI is a subscription-based text generation model that requires minimal input from the user and searches the web to generate the desired output. It is particularly useful for generating short copy text where character limitations are important.
NVIDIA Picasso is an accelerated cloud service for enterprises that need custom generative AI models for creating high-res, photorealistic images, videos, and 3D content. At GSR Ventures and Maverick Ventures, we want to partner with founders using these new tools to improve human health, and work with the existing healthcare giants who are ready to learn about and incorporate these new technologies. Please reach out to us if you are building in or want to learn more about generative AI and healthcare. Companies like BirchAI are automating call centers and managing greater patient inbound calls for tasks like prior authorizations or claim status checks. We’re interested in seeing applications of technology similar to Gong in this space, helping analyze performance and improve over time.
With nearly one-third of its dataset being non-English, Whisper outperforms the supervised state-of-the-art on CoVoST2 to English translation zero-shot. The breakthroughs in Generative AI have left us with an extremely active and dynamic landscape of players. With the advancement of Transformers, a key further breakthrough finding was the potential to train on unstructured data via next word prediction objective on website contents. This delivered surprising capabilities and “zero shot” performance at completing new tasks the model hadn’t been trained for. OpenAI also continued to probe the ability for the performance of these models to continue increasing with more scale and more training data.
It is used in areas such as marketing, advertising, data analysis, and creating new data using existing data. Of course, current AI tools outside of NLP also provide significant advantages to businesses of all sizes. In some cases, AI powers the robotic process automation applications used to automate a variety of tedious and repetitive business processes. At larger businesses, this approach often serves to assist current employees as opposed to replacing them. However, startups may benefit from having a smaller group of employees accomplish more, as highlighted earlier. Generative AI can expand the number of use cases where automation makes a difference.

A prolific businessman and investor, and the founder of several large companies in Israel, the USA and the UAE, Yakov’s corporation comprises over 2,000 employees all over the world. He graduated from the University of Oxford in the UK and Technion in Israel, before moving on to study complex systems science at NECSI in the USA. Yakov has a Masters in Software Development.
As a result, GPT-3 can generate text, translate languages, produce creative content, and answer questions informatively. Starting in 2022, compute power and the AI platform infrastructure layer began catching up to processing requirements Yakov Livshits for generative AI tools, making it possible for more companies to develop generative AI technologies. And more importantly, for existing generative AI developers to extend their models to other users at an affordable rate.
Generative AI is well on the way to becoming not just faster and cheaper, but better in some cases than what humans create by hand. Every industry that requires humans to create original work—from social media to gaming, advertising to architecture, coding to graphic design, product design to law, marketing to sales—is up for reinvention. The dream is that generative AI brings the marginal cost of creation and knowledge work down towards zero, generating vast labor productivity and economic value—and commensurate market cap.
Still, the platform has also been seen to hallucinate and provide dubious instructions. Another major concern is that it is possible to intrude upon Claude’s built-in safety features through clever prompting. Anthropic offers two versions of Claude — Claude (Claude-v1) and Claude Instant. Claude-v1 is a powerful, state-of-the-art high-performance model capable of handling complex dialogue, creative content generation, and detailed instructions. Claude Instant is lighter, less expensive, and much faster, making it suitable for handling casual dialogues, text analysis, and summarization.
Cohere’s base model has 52 billion parameters compared to OpenAI’s GPT-3 DaVinci model, which has 175B parameters. Released in February 2023, LLaMA (Large Language Model Meta AI) is a transformer-based foundational large language model by Meta that ventures into both the AI and academic spaces. The model aims to help researchers, scientists, and engineers advance their work in exploring AI applications. The sharing of codes and weights allows other researchers to test new approaches in LLMs. DeepMind developed a language model called Chinchilla AI in March 2022, which claimed to outperform GPT-3. A key breakthrough in the Chinchilla paper was that previous LLMs had been trained on too little data — for a given parameter size the optimum model should use far more training data than GPT-3.
